Monogrammed Gansey Christening Gown

Difficulty Level: Intermediate

Materials: Loops and Threads Snuggly Wuggly yarn (or other sport weight yarn), 2 skeins white, size 5 circular knitting needles, size 3 knitting needles (or size needed to get gauge), 4 small buttons, stitch markers.

Gauge: 5.5 sts/inch on size 5 needles in st st.

A chart including all 26 letters of the alphabet is included at the bottom of the pattern. Mix and match them to create your one-of-a-kind personalized christening gown! The pattern is designed for three initials across a total of 31 sts. For the pattern to work out as written, make sure to space your letters to fit these 31 sts, since different letters are different widths.

Directions: With size 5 needles, cast on 210 sts. Place a marker on needle. Starting with 1st cast on stitch:

Round 1: knit

Round 2: k4, *p1, k9, rep from * across to last 6 sts; p1, k5.

Round 3: k3, *p1, k1, p1, k7; rep from * across ending last repeat k4.

Round 4: k2, *(p1, k1) twice, p1, k5; rep from *, across ending last rep k3.

Round 5: k1, *(p1, k1) 3 times, p1, k3; rep from * across ending last rep k2.

Round 6: *(p1, k1) 4 times, p1, k1; rep from * across, ending last rep k1.

Round 7: (kl, p1) around.

Round 8: knit

Round 9: purl.

Rounds 10,11,12,13,14: knit

Round 15: purl.

Rounds 16,17: knit

Round 18: k57, place marker, work 1st row of letters, place marker, k to end.

Round 19: rep round 14, working 2nd row of letters between markers.

Round 20: k8 (p2, k15) twice, p2, k12, work 3rd row of letter between markers, k12, (p2, k15) 6 times, end p2, k5.

Round 21: Rep round 16, working 4th row of letters between markers.

Round 22: k6, (p2, k2, p2, k11) twice, p2, k2, p2, k10, work 5th row of letters between markers, k10, (p2, k2, p2, k11) 6 times, end p2, k5.

Round 23: rep round 18, working 6th row of letters between markers.

Round 24: rep round 16, working 7th row of letters between markers.

Round 25: rep round 16, working 8th row of letters between markers.

Round 26: rep round 14, working 9th row of letters between markers.

Round 27: rep round 14, working 10th row of letters between markers.

Rounds 28,29: knit across, removing markers.

Round 30: purl.

Rounds 31, 32, 33, 34, 35: knit.

Round 36: purl

Round 37: knit.

Round 38: (k3, p3) across.

Round 39: (p3, k3) across.

Rounds 40-45: rep rounds 38 and 39 three times.

Round 46: knit.

Round 47: purl.

Round 48: knit

Round 49: k3, (p1, k5) around, ending last repeat k2.

Round 50: k2, (p1, k1, p1, k3) around, ending last rep k1.

Round 51: k1, (p1, k3, p1, k1) around, ending last rep k1, p1.

Round 52: (p1, k5) around.

Round 53: rep round 51.

Round 54: rep round 50.

Rounds 55-59: rep rounds 49-54.

Round 60: rep round 49.

Round 61: knit

Round 62: purl.

Round 63: knit.

Round 64: (k1, p1, k5, p2, T2R, T2L, p2, k5, p1) around.

Round 65: (k1, p2, k4, p2, k4, p2, k4, p2) around.

Round 66: (k1, p3, k3, p2, k4, p2, k3, p3) around.

Round 67: (k1, p2, k4, p2, k4, p2, k4, p2) around.

Round 68: (k1, p1, k5, p2, T2R, T2L, p2, k5, p1) around.

Rounds 64-68 set pattern: Continue in pattern, twisting sts on every 4th row. Work until 19 ½ inches, or desired length of skirt.

Yoke:
Round 1: (k2 tog) across.  (105 sts.)

Round 2: purl.

Split for Back Opening (piece will be worked in rows from this point on): Turn work, so that wrong side is facing for next row.

Row 1:K5, purl across, decreasing 1 st at center Front, cast on 5 sts. (109 sts)

Row 2: k5, (p3, k3) across to last 5 sts, k5.

Rows 3-9: rep row 2.

Row 10: k2, yo, k2 tog(buttonhole made), knit rem sts.

Row 11: knit.

Row 12: k27. Turn.

Leave rem unworked sts on needle while you complete Left Back:

Left Back:

Row 1: Bind off 2 sts. P3, (k1, p5) twice, k1, p3, k5. (25 sts)

Row 2: k5, k2, (p1, k1, p1, k3) three times.

Row 3: p2, (k1, p3, k1, p1) 3 times, k5.

Row 4: k5, (p1, k5) 3 times, p1, k1.

Row 5: rep row 3.

Row 6: rep row 2.

Repeat rows 1-6 for pattern, making buttonholes every 10 rows. Work until Left Back measures 4 inches from bottom of diamond pattern. Bind off.

Attach yarn to rem sts on needle. Bind off 2 sts, knit 53. Turn. Leave rem sts unworked on needle while you complete bodice Front.

Front:

Row 1: Bind off 2 sts, (k1, p5) 8 times, end k1, p1. (51 sts)

Row 2: (p1, k1, p1, k3) across, ending last repeat p1, k1, p1.

Row 3: p3, (k1, p1, k1, p3) across.

Row 4: k4, (p1, k5) across, ending last repeat k4.

Row 5: Repeat row 3.

Row 6: repeat row 2.

Row 7: p1, (k1, p5) across, ending last rep p1.

Repeat rows 2-7 until Front measures 2 ½ inches from bottom of diamond pattern.

Shape Front Neck:

Bind of center 9 sts.
Working each side separately and keeping in set pattern, dec 1 st at neck edge next 2 rows, then dec 1 st every rs row until 16 sts rem. Work even until Front measures same as Back.

Bind off.

Right Back:

Attach yarn to rem sts and bind off 2 sts. Knit rem sts. (25 sts)

Row 1: k5, P3, (k1, p5) twice, k1, p4.

Row 2: k3, (p1, k1, p1, k3), two times, p1, k1, p1, k2, k5.

Row 3: k5, p1, k1, (p3, k1, p1, k1) 3 times.

Row 4: k1, (p1, k5) 3 times, p1, k5.

Row 5: rep row 3.

Row 6: rep row 2.

Repeat rows 1-6 for pattern, making buttonholes every 10 rows. Work until Left Back measures 4 inches from bottom of diamond pattern. Bind off.

Sleeve: (make 2)
Note: M1 means to lift the running thread between two sts, and knit into the back.

With smaller needles, cast on 29 sts.

Work in k1, p1 rib for 10 rows.

Knit next row, increasing 3 sts evenly across. (32 sts)

Knit next row (ws).

Change to larger needles. (As you work pattern from this point, make increases as follows: 1 st at each side of 3rd , and then following 6th row until 44 sts are on needle, working new sts as purl on rs rows, and k on ws rows)

Beginning with a knit row, work 5 rows st st.

Knit 2 rows.

Set up pattern :

Row 1: p5, k1, p1, k1, p5,  k2, p4, k2, p5, k1, p1, k1, p5.

Row 2: (increase row) p1, M1, k3, p2, k1, p2, k4, p2, T2R, T2L, p2, k4, p2, k1, p2, k3, M1, p1.

Row 3: k1, p3, k3, p1, k3, p3, k2, p4, k2, p3, k3, p1, k3, p3, k1.

Row 4: p1, k2, p4, k1, p4, k2, p2, k4, p2, k2, p4, k1, p4, k2, p1.

Row 5: k1, p1, k5, p1, k5, p1, k2, p4, k2, p1, k5, p1, k5, p1, k1.

Rows 1-5 set up pattern. Repeat these 5 rows, twisting on every 4th row, same as for skirt. Continue increasing as you go, until 44 sts rem on needle. Work even till sleeve measures 6 ½ inches. Bind off.

Sew shoulder seams. Sew sleeve seams. Sew sleeves into armholes, centering cable at shoulder seam.

Neckband:
With smaller needles, pick up 51 sts evenly around neck.

Row 1:(p1, k1) across.

Row 2: (k1, p1) across.

Row 3: (p1, k1) across.

Rows 4-9: work st st, beginning with a knit row.

Bind off.

Tack bottom of button band underneath buttonhole band. Sew on buttons to match buttonholes.
