Raveled Cables Christening Gown

Difficulty Level: Intermediate
 
Materials:  Four (50 gm) balls of sport weight yarn, size 3 and 5 (U.S.) circular knitting needles (or size needed to obtain correct gauge), cable needle, stitch markers, 3 small buttons.

Gauge: 6 sts/inch on larger needles.

Abbreviations and Special Stitches:

Tw2R – (twist 2 sts to the right) – K2 tog, but don’t remove from left needle, then knit first st again.   Then remove both sts from left needle.
Invisible Purl Increase – purl into next st, then lift horizontal bar below the stitch just made onto the left hand needle and purl.
Invisible Knit Increase – knit into next st, then lift horizontal bar below the stitch just made onto the left needle and knit.
C4B – (cable 4 sts to the back) – slip 2 sts onto cable needle and hold at back, k2, then k2 from cable needle.
C5B – (cable 5 sts to the back) – slip 3 sts onto cable needle, k2, slip 1 st back to LH needle and purl that st, then k2 from cable needle.
M1 – pick up running thread between sts on needle and knit into the back.

Directions:

With smaller needles, cast on 58 sts.
Row 1: (k1, p1) across.
Repeat row 1 until ribbing measures 1 ¼ inches.
Change to larger needles, and cast on three sts before beginning next row. (61 sts)

Yoke:
Row 1: k3, (k1, make an invisible purl increase -- see instructions above -- in next st) across to last 4 sts, k4. (88 sts)
Row 2: k3, (p1, k2) across to last 4 sts, p1, k3.
Row 3: k3, (k1, p2) across to last 4 sts, k4.
Row 4: repeat row 2.
Row 5: k3, (k1, p1, make an invisible purl increase in next st) across to last 4 sts, k4. (115 sts)
Row 6: k3, (p1, k3) across to last 4 sts, p1, k3.
Row 7: k4, (p3, make an invisible knit increase in next st) across to last 7 sts, p3, k4. (141 sts)
Row 8: k3, p1, (k3, p2) across to last 7 sts, k3, p1, k3.
Row 9: k4, (p3, Tw2R) across to last 7 sts, p3, k4.
Row 10: repeat row 8.
Row 11: k4, (make an invisible purl increase in next st, p2, k2) across to last 7 sts, make an invisible purl increase in next st, p2, k4.  (168 sts)
Row 12: k3, p1, (k4, p2) across to last 8 sts, k4, p1, k3.
Row 13: k4, (p4, Tw2R) across to last 8 sts, p4, k4.
Row 14: rep row 12.
Row 15: k3, make an invisible knit increase in next st, (p4, make an invisible knit increase in next 2 sts) across, to last 8 sts, p4, make an invisible knit increase in next st, k3.  (222 sts)
Row 16: k3, p2, (k4, p4) across to last 9 sts, k4, p2, k3.
Row 17: k5, (p3, make an invisible purl increase in next st, C4B) across to last 9 sts, p3, make an invisible purl increase in next st, k5. (249 sts)
Row 18: k3, p2, (k5, p4) across to last 10 sts, k5, p2, k3.
Row 19: k5, (p5, k4) across to last 10 sts, p5 ,k5.
Row 20: repeat row 18.
Row 21: k3, yo, k1, ssk, (p3, k2 tog, k1, yo, M1, yo, k1, ssk) across to last 9 sts, p3, k2 tog, k1, yo, k3.  (275 sts).
Row 22: k4, (p2, k3) across to last 6 sts, p2, k4.
Row 23: k3, p1, (yo, k1, ssk, p1, k2 tog, k1, yo, p3) across to last 11 sts, yo, k1, ssk, p1, k2 tog, k1, yo, p1, k3.
Row 24: k5, (p2, k1, p2, k5) across to last 10 sts, p2, k1, p2, k5.
Row 25: k3, p2, (C5B, p5) across to last 10 sts, C5B, p2, k3.
Row 26: repeat row 24.
Row 27: k3, p2, (k2, p1, k2, p5) across to last 10 sts, k2, p1, k2, p2, k3.
Row 28: repeat row 24.
Row 29: repeat row 25.
Row 30: repeat row 24.

Join into a round:
With right side facing, slip last 3 sts of work (button band) to spare needle or cable needle. Hold behind first 3 sts of row, and knit 1 st from each needle together three times, then p2. Place a marker to mark beginning of round.
Work across next 34 sts as follows:
(k2, p1, k2, p5) 3 times, k2, p1, k1.

Begin first Sleeve:

Using Cable Cast On, cast on three sts.
Row 1: p9, (k2, p1, k2, p5) 5 times, k2, p1, k2, p1. Turn. Using Cable Cast On, cast on three sts. (68 sts)
(Sleeve will be worked back and forth as rows. Remaining sts on needle will be unworked while sleeve is made.)
Row 2: k4, (p2, k1, p2, k5) 6 times, k4.
Row 3: p9, (C5B, p5) 5 times, C5B, p4.
Row 4: k4, (p2, k1, p2, k5) 6 times, k4.
Row 5: p9, (k2, p1, k2, p5) 5 times, k2,p1, k2, p4.
Repeat rows 4 and 5 three more times, then row 4 once more, ending with right side facing for next row.
Change to smaller needles.
P2tog across next row. (34 sts)
Purl 3 rows.
Bind off purlwise. Leave a tail long enough to sew sleeve seam.
Sew Sleeve seam.

Attach yarn and pick up 4 sts at underarm of sleeve, then continue across sts of Front as follows:
P4, (k2, p1, k2, p5) 6 times, k2, p1, k2, p4.

Begin Second Sleeve:
Using Cable Cast On, cast on three sts.
Row 1: p4, (k2, p1, k2, p5) 6 times, k1. Turn. Using Cable Cast on, cast on three sts. (68 sts)
Row 2: k9, (p2, k1, p2, k5) 5 times, p2, k1, p2, k4.
Row 3: p4, (C5B, p5) 6 times, k4.
Row 4: k9, (p2, k1, p2, k5) 5 times, p2, k1, p2, k4.
Row 5: p4, (k2, p1, k2, p5) 6 times, k4.
Repeat rows 4 and 5 three more times, then row 4 once more, ending with right side facing for next row.
Change to smaller needles.
P2 tog across next row. (34 sts)
Purl 3 rows.
Bind off purlwise. Leave a tail long enough to sew sleeve seam.
Sew sleeve seam.

Attach yarn and pick up 4 sts at underarm of sleeve, then continue across remaining sts of body as follows:
K1, p1, k2, (p5, k2, p1, k2) 3 times, p4.  (148 sts)

Round 1 (all rounds begin and end at marker): (k2, p1, k2, p5) 3 times, k2, p1, k2, p7, (k2, p1, k2, p5) 6 times, k2, p1, k2, p7, (k2, p1, k2, p5) 4 times, p2.
Round 2: (C5B, p4, make an invisible inc in next st) 3 times, C5B, p3, p2 tog, p2, (C5B, p4, make an invisible inc in nexd st) 6 times, C5B, p3, p2 tog, p2, (C5B, p4, make and invisible inc in nex st) 3 times, C5B, p3, p2 tog, p2.  (There should now be 6 purl sts between each cable – 165 sts)
Rounds 3, 4, 5: (k2, p1, k2, p6) around.
Round 6: (C5B, p6) around.
Rounds 7,8,9: (k2, p1, k2, p6) around.
Round 10: (C5B, p6) around.
Rounds 11-16: (k2, p1, k2, p6) around.
Round 17: (k2, make an invisible purl inc in next st, k2, p6) around. (180 sts)
Rounds 18-28: (k2, p2, k2, p6) around.
Round 29: (k2, make an invisible purl inc in next st, p1, k2, p6) around. (195 sts)
Rounds 30-42: (k2, p3, k2, p6) around.
Round 43: (k2, p2, make an invisible inc in next st, k2, p6) around. (210 sts)
Rounds 44-58: (k2, p4, k2, p6) around.
Round 59: (k2, make an invisible inc in next st, p3, k2, p6) around. (225 sts)
Rounds 60-76: (k2, p5, k2, p6) around.
Round 77: (k2, p4, make an invisible inc in next st, k2, p6) around. (240 sts)
Rounds 78-96: (k2, p6, k2, p6) around.
Round 97: (k2, make an invisible inc in next st, p5, k2, p6) around. (255 sts)
Rounds 98-118: (k2, p7, k2, p6) around.
Round 119: (k2, p6, make an invisible inc in next st, k2, p6) around. (270 sts)
Rounds 120-142: (k2, p8, k2, p6) around.

Bind off as follows: k1, insert LH needle back into st just knitted and knit again (3x). Knit next st, then pass 1st st over last st made (picot is formed between the two ‘knit’ sts). *Bind off next 8 sts. Make another picot between next two ‘knit’ sts and bind it off, then bind off next 6 sts. Make another picot between next two ‘knit’ sts, then repeat from * around.

Fold collar down on right side and sew in place.

Sew buttons onto button band (there are no buttonholes, as the buttons should be small enough to pass through the knitted material).
