Owl Tracks Socks

©2014 by Judy Lamb
Picture
Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Fits women's she size 7-9.

Materials: 1 skein Marks and Kattens Big Trend yarn (100 gm ball), shade 410; 40-inch circular knitting needles, size 4; cable needle; sixteen small beads for owl eyes; needle and thread for sewing on beads..

Gauge: 6 sts/inch in stockinette stitch

I used the magic loop method to knit these socks. They are knitted toe up.

Instructions:
Using Judy's Magic Cast On, cast on 8 sts per needle.
Work 1 round even.
Round 2: Inc 1 st at beg and end of each needle.
Repeat round two 3 more times.
Round 6: Knit.
Round 7: Inc 1 st at beg and end of each needle
Repeat rounds 6 and 7  three more times.
There will be 24 sts on each needle.
Sole sts are knit on every round.
For instep, work pattern as follows:
Round 1: k2, (yo, ssk, k4) 3 times, yo, ssk, k2.
Round 2: knit
Round 3: k2, (k2 tog, yo, k4) 3 times, k2 tog, yo, k2.
Round 4: knit
These four rows set pattern.
Continue working pattern on instep sts and stockinette stitch on sole sts until sock measures 5 3/4 inches from beginning.
Increase for Gusset:
Round 1: Instep: Continue to work pattern.
Sole:Inc 1 st at beg and end
Round 2: Instep: Continue in pattern.
     Sole: work in stockinette stitch.
Repeat rounds 1 and 2: 11 more times.  (24 sts for instep, 48 sts for sole).

Shape Heel Cup:
Work across instep sts in pattern.
Heel will be worked back and forth in rows across sole sts.
Row 1: Work across 12 sts of sole, place a marker, k23, sl 1 as if to purl, bring yarn forward to wrap st, place another marker, and then slip wapped st back to left hand needle.
Row 2 (wrong side): purl to 1 st before marker, slip 1 st as if  to purl, move yarn back to right side of fabric to wrap st, slip st back to left hand needle.
Row 3: Knit to 2 sts before previously wrapped st, slip 1 as if to purl, bring yarn forward to wrap st, then slip st back to left hand needle.
Row 4: Purl to 2 sts before previously wrapped st,  slip 1 as if to purl, move yarn back to right side of fabric to wrap st, slip st back to left hand needle.
Next rows; Repeat rows 3 and 4 until all but center 4 sts have been wrapped. You will end by completing row 3.

Work the Heel Flap
Row 1: purl, lifting the wraps and purling them together with their respective sts as you come to them, till one stitch before marker 1. Lift the wrap of the st before marker 1, slip both the st and wrap to right hand needle as if to purl, remove marker, slip both st and wrap back to left hand needle, then purl together the wrap and its st along with the next st. Turn.
Row 2: Sl 1 st as if to purl. Then knit, lifting the wraps and knitting them together with their respective sts as you come to them, till one st before marker. Lift the wrap of the next st completely over and to the left of the st, slip the st as if to knit, sl the wrap as if to knit, remove marker, sl next st as if to knit, place the 2 slipped sts and the wrap bck on the left hand needle, and knit the 2 slipped sts together with the wrap through the back loop. Turn.
Row 3: Sl 1 as if to purl, purl to 1 st before gap, p2tog to close gap. Turn.
Row 4: Sl 1 st as if to purl, *k1, sl1 as if to purl; rep from * to 1 st before gap, ssk to close gap. Turn.
Row 5: Sl 1 st as if to purl, purl to 1 st before gap, p2 tog to close gap. Turn.
Next Rows: Rep rows 4 and 5 until you have decreased away all of the gusset sts. End by working a right side row. There should now be 24 sts again on this needle.

Now you return to working in rounds, but work pattern on both halves of the sock. Work even until sock measures 5 inches from top of heel.

Begin Owl Pattern:
